Italian artist of the Bolognese school. Son of a silk merchant. At the age of 12 he began studying at Denis Calvert's school, where he met Domenichino and Guido Reni. Then he moved to the Carracci Family Academy. In 1600 he moved to Rome, where he worked in the Palazzo Farnese, was one of Annibale Caracci's closest assistants in the paintings of the Church of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli and the Palazzo Mattei di Giove, then worked in the churches of Santa Maria della Pace, San Sebastiano Fuori le Mura, etc. After 1625 he returned to Bologna. He was a master of mythological plots (“Sleeping Venus”, “The Bathing of Diana”, “The Rape of Europa”, etc.), developing them in a style close to Rococo.
