Altman Nathan Isaevich

Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1968). In 1903-1907 studied at the Odessa Art School in the painting department under K.K. Kostandi and G.A. Ladyzhensky, and sculptural by L.D. Iorini and I. Marmone. In 1910-1911 worked at the Free Russian Academy of A.K. Vasilyeva in Paris. Experienced the influence of Cubism. Participant of exhibitions since 1906. He was a member of the association “World of Art” (in 1913, 1915, 1916), “Youth Union” (1913-1914), “0.10” (1915-1916), “Jack of Diamonds” (1916). After the revolution, he created festive decorations for Petrograd in 1918. and Moscow from 1921 to 1928. In the 1920s. created a number of sculptural works, including “Portrait of A.V. Lunacharsky" (Russian Russian Museum), the first sculptural portrait of V.I. Lenin, made from life. He made drawings for Federal Law products (the “Land for the Working People” plate, etc.), sketches for postage stamps, posters, covers for books by V.V. Mayakovsky and I.G. Ehrenburg. He designed theatrical productions in Moscow (“Mystery-bouffe” by V.V. Mayakovsky, 1921), and in Leningrad. In 1928-1938 lived in France. During this period, he created illustrations for N.V. Gogol’s “Petersburg Tales”, published in 1937, and a series of lithographs on the theme of the Old Testament. He took part in exhibitions of the group “L”Arenier” (“Spider”, 1925), the society “Young Europe” (1932), the Association of Revolutionary Writers and Artists (1934, 1935). The artist's personal exhibitions were held in Leningrad (1926, 1938, 1940, 1941, 1961), and in Moscow (1938). N. Altman's works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, in many regional museums, and in museums in many countries around the world.
