Arnautov Viktor Mikhailovich

Arnautov Viktor Mikhailovich (1896, Uspenievka village, Zaporozhye - 1980, Leningrad).

Painter, graphic artist, monumentalist. Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. Professor Emeritus at Stanford University. Received his initial artistic education under the guidance of V.P. Tarasov. Since 1920 he was engaged in the manufacture of icons and painted boxes. At the same time, he received his education at the Lotus studio with M. A. Kichigin and A. Bernardazzi. In 1925 he came to the USA, studied at the California Art School with G. Piesoni, R. Stackpole, Lee Randolph. In 1929 he went to Mexico, where he entered the workshop of D. Rivera. Until 1931 he worked under his leadership on frescoes for the building of the Ministry of Health, the National and Governor's Palaces in Mexico City. Returning to the USA, he painted murals for a clinic in Palo Alto (1932), the Memorial Tower in memory of the firefighters - heroes of the 1906 earthquake (1934–1938) and the school. J. Washington (1936) in San Francisco. In the 1960s, he created the “Conquerors of Space” mosaics on the side façade of the House of Communications (together with G. D. Prikhodko) and at school No. 54, as well as a large mosaic panel for the airport building (together with V. P. Pavlyuk). He painted landscapes, portraits, and genre compositions. In the 1950s he was a member of the San Francisco Graphic Workshop. He participated in international exhibitions in New York (1938) and San Francisco (1940), and exhibitions of the San Francisco Art Association (1937, 1938, 1946). He held personal exhibitions in San Francisco (1933, 1935, 1938), Stockton, Trenton (both 1936), Steinford (1939). He taught at the California School of Art (early 1930s), at the Department of Art and Architecture at Stanford University (1936–1961), professor. Held personal exhibitions in Kyiv (1964), Zhdanov, Gorlovka, Donetsk (1965); participated in Ukrainian republican exhibitions in Kyiv. The author's paintings are in the collections of N.S. Khrushchev, G. Titov, A. Moiseev, M. Rostropovich, the Bolshoi Theater, the Russian Museum, and museums. Zhdanov, Volgograd, Kyiv, etc.
