Bakst Lev Samoilovich

Bakst Lev Samoilovich (1866, Grodno - 1924, Paris).

Painter, graphic artist, theater artist. Until 1894 he attended the Academy of Arts as a volunteer student, then studied in Paris with A.A. Edelfeld. One of the organizers and active figure in the World of Art association. Participant of exhibitions since 1890 (Academy of Artists, Society of Russian Watercolorists, SRH, World of Art, etc.). Outstanding master of theatrical costume. For the troupe S.P. Diaghilev in Paris designed the following productions: “Cleopatra” (1909), “Carnival” (1910), “Scheherazade” by N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov (1910), “Daphnis and Chloe” by M. Ravel (1912). In 1890-1917 worked for the magazines “World of Art”, “Libra”, “Apollo”, “Zhupel”. In 1914 he received the title of academician. After 1917 he lived and worked abroad: in Paris, Brussels, Rome, New York, London. Exhibitions of Bakst's works took place in Paris (1906), Brussels (1910), and Rome (1911). The artist’s works are located in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and the State Central Theater Museum. A.A. Bakhrushin, in many regional museums, as well as in private collections in Russia and abroad.
