Benois Nadezhda Leontievna

Russian artist from the Benois family. She is known, in particular, as a theater artist, set designer and book illustrator. 1896 - 1975 She received her primary education at the Schaffe gymnasium in St. Petersburg, from which she graduated in 1913. Since 1914, she studied at the New Art Workshop with A.E. Yakovlev and V.I. Shukhaev, in 1918-1920 - at the painting department at the State Free Art Workshops with Shukhaev, as well as D.N. Kardovsky and B.P. Popov. In 1920, she married the English journalist Jonah Platonovich Ustinov (1892-1962), with whom she left for England the same year (settled in London). In 1931, she participated in an exhibition of paintings by the Russian group in the gallery of Prince Vladimir Golitsyn. In 1953, the artist was awarded a personal exhibition at the Matthiesen Gallery. In 1975 she exhibited at the Parkin Gallery, and in 1976 at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Benois's work has been acquired by the Manchester Art Gallery and the Tate Gallery, and is also housed in the Carnegie Institution of Pittsburgh, the National Gallery of New Zealand and the Benois Family Museum in Peterhof.
