Soviet theater artist, graphic artist. People's Artist of the Russian Federation (1994). In 1947-1950 studied at the Kyiv Art School. From the age of 15 he worked in professional theaters in Kyiv. In 1956, he made his debut as a production designer at the Kiev Russian Drama Theater named after Lesya Ukrainka. In 1973, he became the chief artist of the Moscow Taganka Theater, where he worked for 30 years and staged more than 20 performances, including “Exchange” and “House on the Embankment” by Yu. Trifonov, “And the Dawns Here Are Quiet...”, “Hamlet”, “Vladimir Vysotsky”. Worked with directors: G. Tovstonogov, A. Efros, O. Efremov, L. Dodin and others. In total, he staged about 150 performances on the drama and opera stages of Russia, Italy, Germany, France and the USA. Since 2002 - was the main artist of the Moscow Art Theater. A.P. Chekhov. He was repeatedly a participant in the Prague Quadrennial (Gold Medal 1971 and Grand Prix 1975), laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation (1998), National Prize "Triumph" (1994), and numerous domestic and foreign awards. The author's works are presented in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Central Theater Museum named after A. A. Bakhrushin, in many regional museums, as well as in private collections in Russia and abroad.
