Bykhovsky Alexander Yakovlevich (1888, Mogilev - 1978, Moscow).

Born into an Orthodox Jewish family. From 1901 he studied painting with the icon painter Gorbunov. After participating in the revolutionary movement, a trip to Turkestan and wanderings in the Volga region, he studied at the School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts in St. Petersburg (did not graduate). Since 1913, participant of exhibitions. In 1922, a personal exhibition took place at the Habima theater studio in Moscow. Participated in exhibitions of the “United Art” (OBIS), “Society of Artists of the Moscow School” (1925), “World Graphics” (Leipzig, 1927). He painted portraits, made miniatures on glass, made covers for publications of the People's Commissariat for Education, headed a poster workshop, designed the magazine "Culture and Revolution", illustrated the works of I. Babel, created sketches for the film "Love and Hate" (dir. A. Gendelshtein), as well as design projects for industrial exhibitions. Since the late 1940s. worked as a sculptor. Founded the Art Studio named after. M.A. Vrubel and taught there. He was friends with the brothers L.S. And D.S. Vygotsky. The famous psychologist and art critic L.S. Vygotsky dedicated his book “A. Bykhovsky. Graphics" (1926). Legacy of A.Ya. Bykhovsky is kept in the Department of Personal Collections of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. A.S. Pushkin, where from February 16 to March 13, 2005 a personal exhibition of the artist’s works was held.
