Efim Mikhailovich Cheptsov (1874, Medvenka, Kursk Province - 1950, Moscow)

Russian and Soviet painter, teacher, Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1946), member of the Leningrad Union of Soviet Artists. Graduated from the drawing school at the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. From 1895, he lived in St. Petersburg. From 1901 to 1904, he studied at the art studio of M.K. Tenisheva. As part of a group of students at the studio, he painted a church in Florence under the guidance of Professor Preobrazhensky. From 1905 to 1911, he studied at the Higher Art School under V. Savinsky, Ya. Tsionglinsky, and V. Makovsky. In 1911, for his painting "At the Doctor's," Cheptsov received the title of artist and the right to travel abroad. He visited Berlin, Vienna, Paris, Florence, Rome, and then settled on the island of Capri, where he met Maxim Gorky. For his painting "Capri," he was awarded a second trip to Italy by the Academy, as well as to Holland and Belgium. After returning to Russia in 1914, he lived in St. Petersburg. He participated in exhibitions of the A. I. Kuindzhi Society (1925-1930) and the Association of Artists of the Revolutionary Russian Federation (AKhRR) - AKhRR (1922-1932). He taught at the AKhRR studio (1926-1929), at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture (1933-1941), and at the V. P. Potemkin Moscow City Pedagogical Institute (1945-1949). The author's works are presented in the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, and in numerous museums and private collections in Russia and other countries.
