Studied at Gagarina's school (New Art Workshop) (1917). In 1918 he entered the PGSHUM (former Academy of Arts) under K.S. Petrov-Vodkin, in 1921 he moved to D.I. Kardovsky, and in 1923 to the printing department of the Academy. Since 1922 he was engaged in book graphics, collaborated with the publishing houses "Aquilon" (from 1922), "Time", "Surf", "Rainbow" (all from 1924), created the design of the books by A. Belenson "The Close Gate" (1922), V. Gauf "Fairy Tales" (1923), N. K. Chukovsky "Tantalene" (1925), L. Borisov “Stupid Stove” (1925), B. Zhitkova “Evil Sea” (1925). In 1922 he wrote and illustrated the children's book "Toy Festival", and in 1925 he released the coloring book "Toys". Until 1925, more than 30 books with its design were published. He was also involved in easel graphics. In 1922, together with B. M. Kustodiev, A. A. Benois and N. A. Benois, he painted the Yagodka tavern in Petrograd, and in 1925 he created decorative panels for the cabaret theater “Cricket on the Stove” on Nevsky Prospekt. In 1919 he married the daughter of A.N. Benoit Anne. In 1925, Benoit emigrated to France with his family. In France, he primarily worked on landscapes and designed the publication of Russian fairy tales in French (1937). Participant of exhibitions since 1918, including exhibitions: World of Art. Petersburg, Anichkov Palace. May-June 1922; Traveling exhibition of Russian art in the USA. 1924-1925; International exhibition. Paris. 1937 (received a gold medal). In the summer of 1943, the first personal exhibition of Yuri Cherkesov was opened in Paris. He also exhibited his works at the Autumn Salon, the Salon of the Independents and the Tuileries. Worked for a model house. A memorial exhibition of Cherkesov was held in 1944 at the Salon of Independents in Paris. In 1963, a retrospective exhibition of the artist's works took place at the Museé Meudon in the suburbs of Paris. In 1997, an exhibition “From Russia to the Soviet Union” was held in Paris at the Hotel de Sens, dedicated to a children’s book, which also featured the artist’s works. Cherkesov's works are in a number of museum collections in Russia and Europe, among them the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and the British Museum in London.
