The artist was educated at the St. Petersburg Theater School (1834-1840), from where he transferred to the Academy of Arts as a pensioner of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. Teachers Chumakov, K. P. Bryullov and P. V. Basin. Having received two silver medals during the academic course, a small and a large one, for portrait studies, Fyodor Petrovich stopped his studies at the Academy due to illness. In 1852, he presented two paintings at an academic exhibition: “The Bacchante” and “The Girl from Albano near Rome.” The paintings were painted so masterfully that the artist was awarded the title of academician for them. F.P. Chumakov also wrote paintings based on gospel subjects. His painting “The Torment of the Savior” was bought by the French government in 1865. The President of the Academy of Arts of that time, Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna, purchased a number of works from F.P. Chumakov in Paris, and Emperor Alexander II in 1866 could not resist the painter’s canvas “The Savior and the Rich Man.” He was awarded the Order of St. Anne, third degree.
