Russian landscape painter. Initially he studied at a military gymnasium, then at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1877–1881) with M. K. Klodt. He was a member of the “Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions” (since 1886), and since 1899 he was a member of the board of the Association. Lived mainly in St. Petersburg. He taught at the Academy of Arts, from 1911 - professor, head of the landscape workshop. Traveled extensively in Western Europe and the Middle East. The artist was attracted by winter and spring views of Russia and Switzerland. The views of the Baltic seaside brought him particular success. A master of picturesque landscapes, he loved calm, “calm” states of nature, sometimes giving them a national-romantic connotation. The artist became famous for his painting “Quiet” (State Tretyakov Gallery), exhibited in 1890, based on sketches made on the White Sea. The artist’s works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Omsk Museum of Fine Arts and other museums.
