People's Artist of the RSFSR. Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. In 1921 he entered the Petrograd Art and Industrial College, where he studied with V. Fedorovich and M. Avilov. Boris Ermolaev’s first professional experience was associated with work in Leningrad newspapers and magazines (“Leninskie Sparks”, “Red Panorama”, “Rezec”). The artist’s first experiments in painting are marked by a rare sense of monumental form, but the small format of the works brings them closer to the usual size of family photographs. The early figurative compositions of Boris Ermolaev are a kind of portraits, close in style to a provincial portrait, with its inherent spontaneity and undisguised moment of posing. After being seriously wounded in 1943, Boris Ermolaev practically never returned to painting. The watercolors he created in the late 1940s and early 1950s are distinguished by their straightforwardness and rough interpretation of form. Working in the experimental lithographic workshop of the Leningrad Union of Artists, Boris Ermolaev creates his own original decorative and plastic system of work in color lithography.
