Ermolaev dreamed of studying painting, but his plans were disrupted by the war. In 1942, he found himself at the front and lost his right arm as a result of injury, but did not give up. In 1953, he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts and became a muralist. During his life, he decorated dozens of buildings with mosaics and paintings. The first personal exhibition took place in 2005 at the Pushkin Museum of Local Lore. The master's works are in regional museums and private collections.
