Scottish genre painter. At the beginning of his career, he was an indoor decorative painter in Edinburgh and at the same time attended classes at the Academy of Arts there, and then moved in 1846 to Dublin, where he taught drawing and portrait work, until he finally became addicted to reproducing scenes of Irish folk life, which later brought him great fame in the English art world. Upon returning to Edinburgh, he was elected a member of the local Academy. From 1862 he settled in London and until recently constantly exhibited his works at the Royal Academy of Arts, which in 1866 accepted him as one of its members. In his works, he conveys the types and morals of people of the lower, mostly poor class, while distinguished by intelligent composition and healthy humor, but he often repeats himself in his figures and sometimes falls into exaggeration and caricature.
