People's Artist of Russia, Honored Artist of the USSR, Honorary Member of the Eurasian Academy, Professor - the true successor of the Russian realistic school. His art is associated with the beauty of Russian nature, which the artist admired. An important place in Fomkin’s work is occupied by landscapes of the Central Russian strip. He loved the ancient Tver land, lived and worked for a long time in the picturesque Toropetsk region. The artist attached great importance to working in the open air and direct perception of nature. A.I. Fomkin was born in 1924 in the village of Elizavetino, Maloarkhangelsk district, Oryol region. In 1929, the family moved to Moscow. In 1939, Fomkin entered the Moscow Secondary Art School, where he studied with V. Ivanov, G. Korzhev, A. Sukhanov, P. Ossovsky and others, who later made up the famous first military graduate of 1944. In the same year, on the recommendation of S.V. Gerasimov, he was enrolled in the Moscow Art Institute without entrance exams for his specialty. At the institute, A. Fomkin studied under the guidance of A. Maksimov, A. Osmerkin and P. Kotov. In the 1950s, the young artist’s diploma painting “I.N. Kramskoy and V.V. Stasov in the studio of I.E. Repin” attracted attention. While working on his dissertation, Alexander Ilyich began teaching, which became his life’s work.
