Soviet artist and painter. Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. Graduated from the Leningrad Higher Art and Technical Institute in 1930. From 1931 onward, she regularly participated in city, regional, and all-Union exhibitions, including the All-Union Art Exhibition (Moscow, 1950) and "Soviet Russia" (Moscow, 1960). A representative of socialist realism, she painted genre paintings, landscapes, and portraits. Many of her works feature children. She lived and worked in Moscow. Erna Gaponenko's works are represented in regional museums in Russia, as well as in private collections in Russia and abroad.
