Chief artist of the Gulag Museum. Painter, member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. Born in Kharkov, graduated from the Kharkov Art School in 1937, and from the Kharkov Art Institute in 1940 (workshops of A. A. Kokel, N. S. Samokish). I went through the whole war. In 1945 he was arrested, and in 1946 he was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 5 years of loss of civil rights for “anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda.” Released in 1953. Until 1976 he lived and worked in the Magadan region, then in Magadan as an artist-painter of the Magadan branch of the Union of Artists. Since 1957, candidate, and since 1964, member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. In 1976 he moved to Orel and until his death in 2004 he worked in the creative workshop of the Oryol organization of the Union of Artists. In 2002–2004 was the chief artist of the State Museum of Gulag History in Moscow. The works of N. I. Getman are kept in gallery collections and in private collections in Russia, Ukraine, Finland, Germany, Bulgaria, Holland, Italy, France, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Japan, Canada, Israel, the USA, in particular, in the State Museum of the History of the Gulag, the Directorate of Art Exhibitions of the Russian Federation, the State Literary Museum of I. S. Turgenev in Orel, the Anadyr District Local Lore Museum Museum, Magadan Regional Museum of Local Lore, Magadan Regional Universal Scientific Library named after. A. S. Pushkin, the Far Eastern Museum of Naval Shipping Company in Vladivostok, the Oryol Regional Museum of Local Lore, the N. S. Leskov House Museum in Orel, the Oryol Museum of Fine Arts, the Interregional Art Gallery “Pro-Mi-Art” in Ryazan. 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001 – creative trips to Washington (USA). 1999 – The Jamestown Foundation honored former US President R. Reagan and artist N.I. Getman with Memorable Signs of Gratitude for their personal contribution to the development of world culture. 1997 – exhibition “The Gulag through the eyes of an artist”, US Congress, US Senate, Washington. 1999 – exhibition “The Gulag through the eyes of an artist”, National Museum, Grand Rapids (USA). 2009 (October-December) - exhibition “GULAG - through the eyes of an artist”, organized by The Heritage Foundation, Washington, USA. Getman N.I. was the guest of honor at the first (2001) inauguration of US President George W. Bush. About the life and work of N.I. Getman has produced several documentaries. In the West, he is considered the “Solzhenitsyn” of painting.
