Ginzburg Ilya Yakovlevich (1859, Grodno - 1939, Leningrad).

GINZBURG (Ginzburg) Ilya (Eliash) Yakovlevich Sculptor, graphic artist. From 1870 he worked in the workshop of M. M. Antokolsky in St. Petersburg. Based on the drawings of F. G. Solntsev, he made ornaments on the throne of the statue “Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich the Terrible.” In the fall of 1871, together with Antokolsky, he left for Italy. In 1878 he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts; studied in the sculpture class of A. R. von Bock, N. A. Laveretsky, I. I. Podozerov. At the same time he attended the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists. In the winter of 1880–1881 he studied in Antokolsky’s Parisian workshop, and for several weeks at the private art school of F. Colarossi. In the spring of 1881 he returned to St. Petersburg and resumed his studies at the Imperial Academy of Arts. During his studies he received all existing academic awards: in 1883 - a small silver medal, in 1884 - a large silver medal, in 1885 - a small gold medal for the program “A Porter Carrying a Killed Beast on His Shoulder”, in 1886 - a large gold medal for the program “The Lamentation of the Prophet Jeremiah on the Ruins of Jerusalem” (bas-relief). In the same year he was released from the Academy with the title of class artist of the 1st degree. He worked in the field of monumental and easel sculpture; created portraits and genre compositions. He completed a number of portrait busts of his contemporaries - major Russian artists, writers, scientists, artists, musicians and public figures. Created monuments to N.V. Gogol in Sorochintsy (1911), I.K. Aivazovsky in Feodosia (1915); participated in competitions for monuments to M. I. Glinka (1903), A. N. Ostrovsky (1916). Author of the tombstones of V. V. Stasov in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra (1908), M. M. Antokolsky at the Preobrazhenskoye Cemetery (1909), D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak at the Volkov Cemetery (1915) in St. Petersburg and others. Since 1882 - participant in exhibitions (2nd exhibition of the Society for Exhibitions of Art Works). He exhibited his works at academic exhibitions (1884–1918, with interruptions), TPHV (1895–1896), St. Petersburg Society of Artists (1898), and the Association of South Russian Artists (1912). In 1889 he received a third-class medal, in 1900 - the First gold medal at the World Exhibitions in Paris, in 1904 - a gold medal at the World Exhibition in St. Louis (1900). He also participated in international art exhibitions in Munich (1893, 1895, 1901, 1909, 1913), Berlin (1896), Venice (1897, 1914), Liege (1905), World Exhibitions in Chicago (1893) and Rome (1911). In 1918–1925 he taught at the Petrograd State Free Art Training Workshops - Vkhutemas; in 1921–1923 - dean of the sculpture faculty of Vkhutemas, professor. He created monuments to G.V. Plekhanov (1921–1925) and D.I. Mendeleev (1932) for Leningrad, as well as sculptural groups “February 1917”, “May Celebrations”, “In the Days of October” (1926). In 1911 he was awarded the title of academician. Since 1912 he was a full member of the Society of Architects and Artists. He held personal exhibitions in Petrograd - Leningrad (1918, 1934). Participated in exhibitions of the Society of Artists named after. A. I. Kuindzhi (1929, 1930), the exhibition “Artists of the RSFSR for XV Years” in Leningrad and Moscow and others. Author of numerous literary works, memoirs of meetings with artists, writers and public figures (Sculptor Ilya Ginzburg: Memoirs, articles, letters / Compiled by E. N. Maslova. L., 1964). Ginzburg's work is represented in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Historical Museum, the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts and others.
