Soviet painter, graphic artist, poster artist. A prominent representative of constructivism, he used photomontage in his work. He worked as a book graphic artist, did magazine illustrations and posters, and collaborated with many publishing houses in Leningrad. He took part in Petrograd exhibitions (1915–1923). Member of creative associations of Leningrad - IsoProletkult and others. In 1918 he took part in an exhibition of modern painting and drawing. He was involved in the festive decoration of Petrograd for the celebration of May 1, 1918 and the first anniversary of the October Revolution; on November 7, 1918, as the chief decorative artist, he carried out the festive decoration of Smolny. Until 1929 he was a professor at VKHUTEIN. He drew for the static magazine “Behemoth” (1925). In the 1920s, he worked in the style of constructivism, creating such propaganda posters as “1917” (1927), “May 1” (1928), “2+2=5” (1931). In the 1930s, he worked on the design of the exhibitions “Defense of the USSR”, History of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks (1939–1940). In 1932, he took part in the First All-Union Poster Exhibition “Poster in the Service of the Five-Year Plan” and in a number of political propaganda poster competitions; his works were repeatedly awarded with diplomas and prizes. Chief artist of the Leningrad branch of the Central Museum of V. I. Lenin (1937–1941). Posters by Ya. M. Guminer are stored in the collections of the Russian State Library, the State Historical Museum, and in private foreign collections.
