Soviet photographer, master of documentary photography, reporter, cinematographer, and journalist. Founder of photojournalism. From 1929, he was a professional photojournalist for the magazines "Contemporary Architecture," "Dayosh," "Radioslushatel," and "Illustrated Workers' Newspaper." From 1930, together with Alexander Rodchenko, he led the photography section of the "October" group, which emerged from the association of the same name. From 1934 to 1935, he headed the illustrations department of the newspaper Vechernyaya Moskva (Evening Moscow), and contributed to the newspapers Pravda, Rabochaya Gazeta, Trud, and Komsomolskaya Pravda, as well as the magazines Narpit, Prozhektor, Krasnaya Niva, Ogonyok, Smena, and Sovetskoye Foto (Soviet Photo). From 1943 to 1944, he was sent to the front by the M. B. Grekov Studio of War Artists as a war photographer. His works are represented in the collections of the A.S. Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the ROSPHOTO State Museum, the Multimedia Art Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago (USA), the Ludwig Museum in Aachen (Germany), the National Gallery of Canada, and many other museum collections, as well as private collections.
