Honored Artist of the RSFSR. Full member of the Academy of Arts (1911). He studied in Vladimir, then at the Faculty of Law of Moscow University. At the same time, he studied at the private school of the architect A. Gunst. In 1892 he studied at the Academy of Arts with P.P. Chistyakov and I.E. Repin (1892-1896, 1900-1902). He studied in the studio of A. Gausch, in Munich in the studio of Aschbe (1896-1900). Since 1903 – assistant in I.E.’s workshop. Repin at the Academy of Arts. Since 1907 he has his own workshop. Painter, draftsman, master of book illustration (illustrated A.P. Chekhov, N.V. Gogol, A.S. Griboyedov), theater artist. He was one of the founders of the “New Society of Artists” (1903-1917). A talented teacher. He taught at the Academy of Arts (1903-1918, 1933-1934), at VKHUTEMAS-VKHUTEIN (1920-1930). Among his students are V.P. Efanov, A.N. Savinov, P.A. Shillingovskaya, D.A. Shmarinov, V.I. Shukhaev, A.E. Yakovlev. Works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and in many regional museums
