Karpenko Mikhail Mikhailovich (1915–1991)

Painter, graphic illustrator, poster artist. Member of the Union of Artists of the Latvian SSR (since 1950). His posters are famous: “Under the banner of Lenin under the leadership of Stalin - forward for the complete defeat of the German occupiers!” and “Let's clear Soviet land from German invaders!” (1943). In 1946, Karpenko began to engage in book graphics. Karpenko is the artist of the first illustrated edition of B. Polevoy’s novel “The Tale of a Real Man” in the Soviet Union (Latgosizdat, 1947). Collaborated with Latvian publishing houses (1948–1949). In the 1940s and 50s he was engaged in mass propaganda art. Author of political posters: “The indestructible union of free republics is united forever by Great Rus'” (1948), “Glory to the Soviet people, who are successfully implementing the new Stalinist five-year plan!” (1950). Participant of numerous republican, all-Union and foreign exhibitions. On the occasion of his 70th anniversary, his personal exhibition was held at the House of Artists in Riga. Books with illustrations by M. Karpenko were published in Bulgaria, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Portugal, and France.
