Cassandre Adolphe Jean-Marie

Cassandre Adolphe Jean-Marie (1901-1968)

French painter, lithographer, master of advertising posters and font designer. In Paris, he studied at the École des Beaux Arts and the Julian Academy. His poster won first prize at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris in 1925, which gave rise to the Art Deco style. In 1936, Cassandra's works were shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York as part of the presentation of Harper's Bazaar. After that, he collaborated with the magazine and created more than 40 surrealist—style covers for it (1936-1939). In 1947, together with Serge Lifar, he created the libretto and designed Henri Sauget's ballet Mirages at the Paris Opera. Cassander designed several fonts: Bifur (1929), Acier Noir (1935), Peignot (1937) and Touraine (1947, together with Charles Payne). In 1963, he designed the logo of the Yves Saint Laurent fashion house. Cassandra's works are kept at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, are presented at auctions and are in private collections around the world.
