Claude-Joseph Vernet

French painter. Father of Charles Vernet, grandfather of Horace Vernet. He studied in Italy with Bernardino Fergioni and became one of the most outstanding landscape painters of his time. In 1754–1762, by order of the king, he painted a series of paintings of Ports of France. His large canvases were purchased to decorate palaces throughout Europe. The artist's works are in the Louvre (Paris), in many museums in Europe, as well as in private collections in Russia.
