Kontratovich Ernest Rudolfovich

Painter, born in Austria-Hungary. People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1991). One of the founders of the Transcarpathian school of painting, which is often called the “Transcarpathian Barbizon” or “Subcarpathian Barbizon”. In 1932 he graduated from the Uzhgorod Teachers' Seminary. At the same time, he attended the Uzhgorod public art school-studio, founded by A. Erdeli and J. Bokshay. Since 1934 - member of the Podkarpackie Association of Artists. He created his own direction of expressionism, in which he reflected the themes of nature, folklore and folk life of Transcarpathia. The artist’s works are now kept in museums, galleries and private collections in Ukraine, Slovakia, Hungary, and Russia.
