Konenkov Sergey Timofeevich (1874-1971)

Russian and Soviet sculptor, graphic artist, teacher, academician of the USSR Academy of Arts (1954; corresponding member since 1947), People's Artist of the USSR (1958), Hero of Socialist Labor (1964), winner of the Lenin Prize (1957) and the Stalin Prize of the third degree (1951). He received professional education at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1892-1899) from S. I. Ivanov and S. M. Volnukhin, graduated with the title of a non-class artist. In 1897, he was sent abroad by the college, visited Germany, France, and Italy. In 1899-1902, he continued his studies at the Higher Art School at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg.‑In St. Petersburg in the workshop of V. A. Beklemishev.Participated in numerous exhibitions. In the pre-revolutionary period, he was noted at exhibitions of the Union of Russian Artists (since 1909), the World of Art association (1917-1923), and also presented the "Forest Series" of wooden sculptures in 1907. He held solo exhibitions in his own workshop on Presnya in 1916 and 1917. During the American period (1923-1945), he held solo exhibitions in New York (1925) and Rome (1928). After returning to the USSR, he participated in All-Union and national exhibitions, including a large-scale exhibition in Smolensk (1958), which he personally opened.Konenkov's works are kept in major museums in Russia and abroad. In the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Smolensk Museum, the Konenkov Memorial Museum‑Workshop in Moscow, Princeton University and in private collections around the world.
