Painter, theater artist. Full member of the Imperial Academy of Arts (since 1905). Member of the Molkh (since 1889), the World of Art association (since 1910), and the Union of Russian Artists (since 1903). He studied in Moscow at MUZHVZ (1875-1880, 1882-1886) with E.S. Sorokina, V.G. Perova, I.M. Pryanishnikova, A.K. Savrasova, V.D. Polenova; in St. Petersburg at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1881). Member of the Abramtsevo art circle (since 1885). Since 1889 he participated in exhibitions of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions. In 1887 he visited Paris, then traveled through Italy and Spain (1888). In 1894 he traveled to the Russian North, Norway and Sweden. Since 1885, artist of the Russian Private Opera S.I. Mamontova; since 1910, chief decorator and consulting artist of the Imperial Theaters in Moscow. He taught in Moscow at MUZHVZ (1910-1918). In 1923 he emigrated to Paris. In the 1920-1930s. worked on designing performances for theaters in Europe and America. The artist's personal exhibitions were held in Moscow (1921, 1923, 1941, 1987), Berlin (1921, 1923), Paris (1925, 1932), Kyiv (1961), Leningrad (1963, 1986-1987). The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and many other museums around the world.
