Kravchenko Nikolai Ivanovich (1867-1941)

Russian battle artist, journalist and writer. He studied at the Richelieu Gymnasium in Odessa, then at the city Real College and at the Odessa Drawing School of the Society of Fine Arts, from which he graduated in 1888 with a silver medal. In the same year, he moved to St. Petersburg and entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in the class of battle painting by Professor Bogdan Villevalde immediately for the second year. He soon left the Academy and returned to Odessa. In 1891, he went to Paris, where he studied at the academies of Julien and Colarossi, and also studied with the French artist Jean-Leon Jerome. In 1892 One of his portraits was accepted at the Paris Salon and attracted the attention of the press. In 1893 he participated in the exhibition of the same salon. At the invitation of the publisher Alexei Suvorin, he moved to St. Petersburg, where he worked as an artist and journalist. In 1895 he painted a portrait of Anton Chekhov. He created a series of drawings from the life of the Guards regiments, made during visits to camps and maneuvers of the Russian army; these works were presented to Emperor Nicholas II in 1900.
