Russian battle artist, journalist and writer. He studied at the Richelieu Gymnasium in Odessa, then at the city Real College and at the Odessa Drawing School of the Society of Fine Arts, from which he graduated in 1888 with a silver medal. In the same year, he moved to St. Petersburg and entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in the class of battle painting by Professor Bogdan Villevalde immediately for the second year. He soon left the Academy and returned to Odessa. In 1891, he went to Paris, where he studied at the academies of Julien and Colarossi, and also studied with the French artist Jean-Leon Jerome.
