Cooper Yuri Leonidovich (1940)

Russian-American artist. After classes with Pavel Chistyakov’s student V. Ya. Tarasova, he entered the art and graphic department of the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute named after V. I. Lenin, graduating in 1963. He was engaged in book graphics, worked for the publishing house “Young Guard”. In 1972 he emigrated and lived in Israel, France, and New York. Yuri Cooper has had more than 50 personal exhibitions, including at the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, the Claude-Bernard Gallery in Paris, the Jan Kruzhier Gallery in Geneva, etc. He also worked for the theater. The set design of the play “Boris Godunov” at the Bolshoi Theater directed by Alexander Sokurov was nominated for the Golden Mask award (2008). Cooper's works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in the collections of the French Ministry of Culture, the Library of Congress, etc. The work presented at the auction by Yu.L. Cooper "Carmen", is one of twelve set designs for the opera "Carmen" by Bizet, which is staged in Rostov by Yuri Laptev.
