Painter, graphic artist. One of the leaders of the “Turkestan avant-garde”. He studied at the Kazan School (1904-1907), then at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in the class of K. Korovin. After the establishment of Soviet power, he participated in the organization of the Altai Art Society in Barnaul, was the leading artist of the association, and participated in all its exhibitions. In 1919 he was sent to Tashkent, and in the same year he made a trip to China. Upon his return, he completed a series of works “Chinese Theater” using the auto-stencil technique. In the early 1920s. taught materials technology at VKHUTEIN, together with Vladimir Mayakovsky worked at ROSTA Windows. In 1921 he made a creative trip to the cities of Siberia. In 1923 he moved to Crimea and got a job as an artist at the Simferopol Party School Theater. In 1924, together with E. Korovai, he traveled through the cities of the Caucasus, then worked at the Tashkent Theater. Y. Sverdlova, taught at an art studio and technical school. Drawings and posters by M.I. Kurzin's works were often reproduced in periodicals of those years. In 1927 M.I. Kurzin joined the creative group “Masters of the New East” and in 1929 became chairman of the Association of Fine Arts Workers in Tashkent. In 1946 he joined the Union of Soviet Artists of Uzbekistan. Works by M.I. Kurzin are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan, in large regional museums, in private collections in Russia and abroad
