Master of urban and industrial landscape. Since 1947, he worked as the chief artist at the Houses of Officers in Furstenberg, then in Frankfurt‑The Oder. In 1951, he returned to Moscow, entered the Art College, and then the Polygraphic Institute, from which he graduated in 1957. In the same year, he was accepted into the City Committee of Graphic Artists, where he joined the group of Eliya Belyutin, and in 1958 his first solo exhibition was held in the City Committee. In 1960, he joined the Union of Journalists of the USSR and began working in metropolitan magazines and newspapers, creating illustrations for articles. He is the author of a series of postcards "BAM — All-Union construction site" and illustrations for books "The Road to the Ocean", "The Artery of Life", "The Land of the Five Suns". For his services in promoting the work of railway workers and transport builders, he was awarded the medal "For the construction of the Baikal‑Amur Mainline" and the medal of the Ministry of Culture "For active participation in the cultural life of the builders of BAM", was awarded the bronze medal of the VDNH, and also received the "Golden Badge of Polish‑Soviet Friendship" for the solo exhibition "We are building BAM" in Warsaw (1977). Participated in exhibitions in Moscow, Leningrad, Poland, France, Spain and Finland. Kharchenko's works are kept in the Museum of Reconstruction of Moscow, the Museum of the Revolution, the Pushkin Museum, as well as in the vaults of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Union of Artists of Russia.
