He studied at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg with landscape painters M.N. Vorobyov and B.P. Villevalde. Living in Feodosia, he was influenced by I.K. Aivazovsky. Painter, watercolorist, master of seascape. In 1845 he took part in a voyage on the frigate "Threatening" to study the structure of a warship. He traveled along the shores of the Baltic Sea to write sketches, and was sent to Vyborg and the Caucasus. For the painting “View of the Swamp on the Fox’s Nose” he was awarded a large gold medal and the right to a pensioner’s trip abroad. Visited Paris, Rome, wrote Tivoli, Olevano, Sorrento. He spent eight years in Italy. For the work performed there, upon his return he received the title of professor. Based on sketches created during numerous trips to the Caucasus, the Black Sea and Caspian coasts, he created large works. At the end of his life he painted coastal views of Finland and Norway. In 1885, by imperial order, he created paintings based on scenes from the Russian-Turkish War, and visited the theater of military operations in European and Asian Turkey. The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum.
