Painter, engraver. Student of Karl Vanloo. In 1754 he attended the French Academy in Rome. In the same year he received the title of Academician. In 1760 he came to St. Petersburg at the invitation of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna to finish work in the Winter Palace. He taught at the Russian Academy of Arts. In 1781-1787 served as director of the French Academy in Rome. The artist’s works are in the Louvre (Paris), the Hermitage, the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin Museum.
