Lenbach, Franz von

Lenbach, Franz von (1836, Schrobenhausen, Upper Bavaria - 1904, Munich).

A central figure in the artistic life of Munich at the end of the 19th century. In 1853-1857 studied at the Munich Academy of Arts with K.T. von Piloty. Worked in Italy, Spain. In 1878-1879 commissioned by the National Gallery in Berlin, he paints a portrait of the Reich Chancellor of Germany Otto von Bismarck and from that time on becomes “Bismarck’s artist.” In 1901 he became the first president of the Munich Association of Artists.
