Levin Moisey Zeligovich

Levin Moisey Zeligovich (1896, Vilna - 1946, Leningrad).

He studied with N. I. Altman at the Petrograd Vkhutemas and at the Courses for the Mastery of Stage Productions, led by V. E. Meyerhold. I became interested in theater. Levin designed the first performance in 1920, and already in the mid-1920s. was among the best theater artists in Leningrad. Levin became one of the founders of a new scenography designed to actively participate in the performance - he himself called it “fine directing.” Many of his works are recognized as classics: “Three Fat Men” by Yu. K. Olesha, 1930; "Sorochinskaya Fair" by M. P. Mussorgsky, 1931; "Enemies" by M. Gorky, 1933. He worked equally successfully in the drama theater, and in the opera, and in children's, and in the music hall. The most lasting and fruitful was his collaboration with the Leningrad GBDT, whose chief artist he became in 1932. It was here that he did his best work - the famous design for the play "Joy Street" ("Street of Joy", 1932) based on the play by N. A. Zarkhi. The series of portraits of the famous poet Vladimir Mayakovsky seems extremely interesting. Vivid, often grotesque imagery, expressiveness and sharpness of spatial constructions distinguish Mayakovsky’s images.
