Master of the everyday genre. Academician. Full member of the Academy of Arts (1893). Professor (1894). Brother K.E. Makovsky. He studied painting under the guidance of V.A. Tropinina. In 1861 he entered the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, founded by his father, and studied with E.S. Sorokin and S.K. Zaryanko. He was a member of the Association of Itinerants. He taught at the Moscow School of Painting and Painting (from 1882), and then at the Academy of Arts (1894-1896 he served as rector of the Academy of Arts). The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and in many regional museum collections.
