Painter, graphic artist, theater artist. He studied at the Kyiv Drawing School (1895-1896), at the MUZHVZ (1904-1910), and at the studio of F.I. Rerberg in Moscow. Since 1907, he took part in the first series of Moscow exhibitions “Jack of Diamonds”, “Moscow Salon”, “Donkey’s Tail”, “Target”, “Tram B” and “0.10”, where “Black Square” was shown. Lived in Moscow and Leningrad. He taught at the Moscow State Art Museum (1918), director of the Vitebsk People's Art School (1919-22), organizer of UNOVIS. In 1923-1926. headed INHUK, and from 1932-35. experimental laboratory at the State Russian Museum. Author of the manifesto “Suprematism” (1915). Member of the Association of Left Artists (1917). The founder of the modern avant-garde, whose innovative art and creative principles influenced the formation of a huge layer of visual culture of the 20th century. His works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and in many regional museums and private collections.
