Representative of Russian Art Nouveau. From 1885 he was a novice at the monastery of St. Panteleimon on Mount Athos, worked in an icon-painting workshop. Thanks to the help of sculptor V.A. Beklemishev, moved to St. Petersburg and entered the Academy of Arts, where he studied, in particular, with I.E. Repina, P.P. Chistyakova, V.V. Vereshchagina (1892-1899). Participated in exhibitions of the Association of the Wanderers and the World of Art, and was a member of the Union of Russian Artists. He gained fame after he received a gold medal at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris for the painting “Laughter” (1899, Gallery of Modern Art, Venice). Since 1900, he lived mainly in an estate near the village of Aksinino near Ryazan, visiting St. Petersburg and Moscow. In 1918 he moved to Ryazan, and in 1920 to Moscow. He was delegated by the “Union of Russian Artists” to the Kremlin, where he painted from life V.I. Lenin and other party leaders. In 1922 he emigrated to France. The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and in many European museums.
