Marevna is a pseudonym invented by M. Gorky in 1912 for Maria Bronislavovna Vorobyova-Stebelskaya (1892, Kazan province - 1984, London). She studied at the Tiflis School of Fine Arts (1907-1908), then at the Stroganov School in Moscow (1910). In 1912 she went to Paris, studied at the academy of I. Zuloaga and F. Colarossi. She lived in Montparnasse, in the circle of artists of the “Beehive”, Maria Vasilyeva Academy. She became a prominent representative of the so-called “Paris School”. She was influenced by cubism. After the First World War, she turned to the technique of pointillism, creating a unique fusion of both directions, interpreted in a decorative spirit. At the same time, she worked for the Irfe fashion house, headed by F. Yusupov and his wife, as well as for the famous couturier Paul Poiret. Her works were bought by a famous collector, Parisian police commissioner Leon Zamaron. Since 1912 she participated in Paris exhibitions. She exhibited at the Salon of the Tuileries, at the Salon of Independents, and at the famous Rotunda cafe. In 1936 – 1948 lived in the south of France, in 1948 she moved to England. Marevna's personal exhibitions were regularly held in galleries in Paris and London. In 1992, the Wildenstein Gallery in London hosted the exhibition “Marevna and Montparnasse” to mark the centenary of the artist’s birth. In 2004, the State Tretyakov Gallery hosted an exhibition of the artist’s works. A large collection of Marevna's works belongs to the Petit Palais Museum (Geneva).
