The painting was painted by students of I.E. Repin with the direct participation of Ilya Efimovich himself. The work was commissioned by the writer Alexei Maksimovich Gorky, who in 1900 became acquainted with the original painting by I.E. Repin in the State Tretyakov Gallery. Leaving his hometown, A.M. Gorky transferred the ownership of this painting to the Nizhny Novgorod Art and Historical Museum. In 1924-1934. As a result of the reorganization of the museum, the painting was lost; later it ended up in the collection of S.A. Tarasova.
