Melamid Alexander Danilovich (born 1945, Moscow)

Artist and performance artist. The duo "Komar & Melamid" is considered the founder of the Sots Art movement. He studied at the Moscow State Academy of Arts and Industry named after S. G. Stroganov, where he met Vitaly Komar. In the late 1960s, they began working together and were one of the creators of Sots Art (parallel to the Western Pop Art movement). One of the organizers of the Bulldozer Exhibition. Under pressure from the Soviet authorities, he immigrated to the United States in 1977. Alexander is currently working in Chelsea (New York) on his Art Healing Ministry project and has already completed a series of works called “Gold is back, thank god!” (“The gold is back, Lord, thank you”). In 2019, Melamid presented his first solo project in Russia since emigrating in 1977.
