Honored Artist of the RSFSR. He graduated from the courses of the Association of Artists of the Revolution (AHR) in 1932. From the very beginning he declared himself as an artist of the northern theme. He sailed as a sailor on merchant ships, participated in the first Arctic expeditions of the 30s. During the war, Merkulov worked as a battle painter on the Northern Front. Participant of numerous exhibitions of the 30-70s.
