Soviet and Russian photographer, cameraman, documentary director, screenwriter. People's Artist of the USSR (1990), laureate of the Stalin Prize (1943, 1949, 1951) and the USSR State Prize (1976). Member of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR. Academician of the Russian Academy of Cinematographic Arts "Nika". From 1924 to 1934 he studied at the State College of Cinematography (later VGIK). Since 1931 he worked as a cameraman at the Soyuzkinokhronika film studio. Filmed the opening of the All-Russian Agricultural Exhibition, the rescue of the Chelyuskinites, the flights of V. Chkalov and M. Gromov to America. In the period from 1936 to 1940, he collaborated with the Izvestia newspaper, filming photo reports. Since 1941 - cameraman at the Mostekhfilm studio. During the war years, he was a front-line operator, a special correspondent for the Pravda newspaper, and wrote a lot for it and other central and front-line newspapers. After the war, he worked at the TsSDF studio as a cameraman and documentary director.
