He studied painting under the guidance of his brother Nikolai. In the 1890s. studied at Moscow University at the Faculty of Law and History and Philology. He participated in the exhibition “Blue Rose” (1907), as well as in exhibitions of the Union of Russian Artists and the World of Art. Designed the magazines “Scales” and “Golden Fleece” (1906–1909). Wrote critical articles. In 1906, he made his debut as a set designer, creating the scenery for V. E. Meyerhold’s play based on G. Ibsen’s play “Hedda Gabler” (together with N. N. Sapunov; in the St. Petersburg theater of V. F. Komissarzhevskaya) in a fairy-tale-surreal style. After the revolution, he was a member of the Commission for the purchase of paintings for the Moscow Museum Fund. He created a series of illustrations for “A Feast in the Time of Plague” by A.S. Pushkin (1927), as well as paintings based on literary works (Cervantes, N.V. Gogol, Charles Dickens). The artist's works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery.
