One of the leading painters of everyday life of the mid-19th century. Since the 1870s He wrote works on historical subjects. Studied at the MUZHVZ under M.I. Scotty and S.K. Zaryanko (1851-1856). In 1855 he received the title of non-class artist for painting domestic scenes, in 1859 - the title of class artist. From 1887 to 1890 taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Member and permanent exhibitor of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions since 1881. The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, in the State Russian Museum.
