Nilus Pyotr Aleksandrovich (1869, Podolsk Governorate, Russian Empire – 1943, Paris)

Russian painter, art critic, and writer. From 1883 to 1889, he studied at the Odessa Drawing School under K.K. Kostandi. In Odessa, Nilus became one of the central figures of the local artistic community. From 1890 onward, he participated in exhibitions of the Association of South Russian Artists. In the 1890s, he painted primarily genre paintings on socially significant themes. In 1915, P.A. Nilus held a solo exhibition in Odessa. From 1923, he lived in Paris. His first solo exhibitions in Paris took place in 1925 at the prestigious galleries of J. Petit and J. Charpentier. Nilus's last exhibition during his lifetime at the Zak Gallery (1934) was a great success. The artist's works are held in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Odessa Art Museum, the Odessa Literary Museum, the State Literary Museum (Moscow), the I.N. Kramskoy Regional Art Museum (Voronezh), the Dnepropetrovsk Art Museum, and in private collections.
