Painter, graphic artist, set designer. In 1893–1898 he studied at the Stroganov Art and Industrial School, after graduation he worked there as a drawing teacher. In 1900 he met the architect I.V. Zholtovsky, who became his teacher and friend for many years. In 1904, together with Zholtovsky, he traveled around Italy. From 1905 he taught at the Higher Construction Courses. Started to study architecture. In 1908–1913, several buildings were built according to Nivinsky’s designs. At the same time, he worked as a master of decorative painting, in particular, in 1906–1912 he supervised decorative work during the construction of the Museum of Fine Arts (now the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts). In 1907 he entered the Moscow Archaeological Institute and attended the private school of K. F. Yuon. In 1908 and 1910–1912 he again undertook trips to Italy. He began working as an easel painter. From 1909 he took part in exhibitions of the Moscow Association of Artists, and from 1913 - in the World of Art. In 1911 he turned to etching, which became, along with the theater, the main area of his work. In 1916–1917 he created a cycle of etchings “Crimean Suite”. After the revolution, he taught at the Moscow Higher School of Civil Engineering. In 1918, he headed the section of folk festivals at the Moscow City Council, then supervised the painting of propaganda trains. In 1919 he founded and headed the Union of Engravers. In 1921–1927 he headed the drawing department at the Moscow Higher Art and Technical School, teaching, in addition to drawing, the theory of shadows and perspective. In 1927–1930 he was a professor at the Higher Art and Technical Institute. From 1921 he worked as a theater artist. Collaborated with E. B. Vakhtangov in the Third Studio of the Moscow Art Theater. In 1922 he designed the play “Princess Turandot” by C. Gozzi. In the same year, he created sketches of costumes and scenery for the production of “Gadibuk” by S. An-sky at the Habima Theater-Studio in Moscow. He also worked at the Second Studio of the Moscow Art Theater, the Maly Theater, the Jewish Theater, and the Moscow Art Theater. In 1924 he became a member of the “4 Arts” association. In 1925 he was awarded a gold medal at the International Exhibition of Artistic and Decorative Arts in Paris. In 1923–1925 he worked on a series of etchings dedicated to the Caucasus. In 1925 he showed his etchings at a personal exhibition at the State Museum of Fine Arts. In 1928, Nivinsky's personal exhibition took place in Paris. In 1937 he was posthumously awarded a diploma and a gold medal at the International Exhibition in Paris “Art and Technology in Contemporary Painting.” The master's work is presented in many Russian museums.
