Born in Moscow in the family of a large entrepreneur. He was sent to the Academy of Commercial Sciences, however, after meeting S.I. Mamontov and joining his “Abramtsevo” circle, he became interested in art. He visited the art studio of P.P. Chistyakov, took advice from I.E. Repin, V.D. Polenov, V.A. Serov. He was a member of the Association of Itinerants and the Union of Russian Artists. He became one of the prominent Russian landscape painters, combining a soft impressionistic style of painting with the poetics of “mood landscape”. He sold his paintings to P.M. Tretyakov and was his friend and advisor. For many years he was a member of the board of trustees of the Tretyakov Gallery, and published a luxurious edition describing the paintings in the collection with his comments. He collected a unique collection of ancient Russian art (icons from the 14th-17th centuries). At the end of his life he painted landscapes from memory.
