Genre painter. He received his initial artistic training under the guidance of his father, a provincial painter. In 1846 he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. His teachers were V. Vorobiev and B. Villevalde. At the academic exhibition in 1857 he received a small gold medal for the painting “Demyanov’s Ear” (based on a fable by Krylov). In 1860, for the painting “Tea Warehouse at the Nizhny Novgorod Fair,” the Academy awarded Popov the title of class artist of the 1st degree and a large gold medal. From 1863 to 1867 he was a pensioner in Paris and Rome, where he wrote “Festivities on Monte Pigno.” Upon his return, he painted a large canvas, “Booths in Tula on Holy Week” (Tretyakov Gallery; State Russian Museum - repetition).
