Laureate of the USSR State Prize (1968). One of the leaders of “severe style” painting in Azerbaijani and Russian art. Graduated from the Art College named after A. Azimzade in Baku (1950) and the Moscow State Art Institute. V.I. Surikov (1957). Lived in Baku, then moved to Moscow, but constantly came to his homeland. Was influenced by A.A. Deineka, as well as “heroic portraits” by P.D. Corina. He became famous for his paintings about oil workers and portraits of the artistic intelligentsia. In 1973–1992. held the position of first secretary of the Union of Artists of the USSR, since 1979 academician-secretary of the Russian Academy of Arts in the painting department, since 1996 - vice-president of the Academy. Many of Salakhov’s significant works are associated with impressions from foreign trips to Spain, the USA, Mexico and other countries. He also worked a lot as a set designer. He taught at the Baku School named after M. Aliyev (1963–1974) and at the Moscow State Art Institute named after. V.I. Surikov (since 1975). The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and the Azerbaijan State Museum of Fine Arts. R. Mustafayev (Baku), in many other museums.
